Doctors that left Medicine

Opportunities outside Medicine, Resources, Medical jobs

Hey there, Joyce here

And what do we have for today?🤩

Doctors who left clinical medicine and what they do now.

There is only one way to succeed in Medicine - The clinical medicine path.

Absolutely not. Here’s how some doctors who left clinical medicine are achieving success and you can too:

Role #1 Education: Medical knowledge is a goldmine for the education sector. You can become professors at universities, write medical textbooks or curriculum, or even develop continuing medical education programs (CME) for practicing physicians.

Role #2 Consulting: Doctors can leverage their expertise as consultants, either independently or for an organization. This could involve healthcare consultancy, offering objective analysis and strategic improvement plans, or working in medical consultancy, a popular and lucrative option.

Role #3 Entrepreneurship: The fire to be their own boss can lead doctors to create their own ventures. This could involve solopreneurship, where they sell a service or product related to medicine, or they could develop a medical device or product and bring it to market.

Role #4 Non-Profits and Global Health: For doctors with a desire to give back, there are opportunities with NGOs or international organizations. They could work abroad, bringing their medical expertise to underserved areas, or return home and use their experiences for non-profit consulting.

Role #5 Medical Writing and Communications: The ability to explain complex medical concepts clearly is valuable. Doctors can find careers as medical writers, editors, or science communicators, creating educational materials or content for a wider audience.

Role #6 HealthTech: This involves either creating technological solutions for healthcare problems by learning a tech skill or being on the board for healthtech companies as a medical advisor to help build successful health products. This is a path quite dear to my heart, I started on it as a medical student and wrote a guide to help others get started too; Guidebook on getting into HealthTech

✍Quote of the week

I HAVE EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT🎉🎉

I'm particularly pleased about the additional section that will be included to the letters. One of the few deficiencies I've found in medical education is a lack of mentorship opportunities for both practitioners and medical students, which can lead to poor career choices. In the coming weeks we will have doctors talk to us about navigation success in their different medical roles both clinical and non clinical paths. Stay connected.

If you are reading this letter and would love to share your own story, do send me reply.

Till next week, warm wishes.

Joyce.
